Mucositis is a common and debilitating complication associated with the cytotoxicity of radiotherapy, chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Mucositis results in ulceration and pain in both the mouth and intestine that may require opioid use. This can adversely affect patient’s quality of life to an extent that a delay or even cessation of cancer treatment is necessitated. Despite the significant clinical and economic impact of mucositis, this condition remains a significant burden for up to 80% of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapeutic or radiation regimens. Coagents used in its management (anti-inflammatories, biologic response modifiers, cytoprotectants antimicrobials, antifungal) are generally only palliative with only few medications approved to date. This book, published by STEMM Research, provides a concise yet complete guide discussing the anatomical districts, causative factors, pathogenesis, clinical aspects and assessment, as well as management of this most debilitating condition.
